Following the cancellation of the spring sports season in 2020, there were many unknowns about what athletic participation would look like in 2020-21 – if it happened at all. After much hard work from coaches, administrators, the COVID-19 Task Force, and our student-athletes and their families, in-person participation resumed and the Raiders’ winning tradition continued. Because of your loyalty and generosity, Gulliver Prep continues to be named the best high school sports program in Miami.
One of the five pillars of our Athletic Department is academic achievement, and we are incredibly proud of our student-athletes’ academic performance this year. The combined GPA for all varsity teams in 2020-21 was an impressive 3.57.
Our water polo program swept top honors at the annual Miami Herald Athletic Awards Ceremony, as Bruno Rebessi ‘21 was named Boys’ Water Polo Player of the Year, Alissa Pascual ‘21 was named Girls’ Water Polo Player of the Year, and Head Coach Carroll Vaughan earned Coach of the Year recognition. Additionally, Ajah Mallary ‘22 was tabbed Softball Pitcher of the Year (4A-2A), while David Suarez (girls’ cross country) and Chris George (girls’ swimming) earned Coach of the Year honors for their respective sports.
Inspired by current and historic events, the Athletic Department created a unified movement to highlight the ongoing need for equality for
all, unveiling an “EQUALITY” t-shirt for all Middle and Upper School athletic teams. Spearheading this idea was parent George Lombard P ‘23
‘26, who participated in our inaugural Career in Sports Night last year and serves as a coach for the Detroit Tigers. The back of the shirt featured a quote from Lombard’s late mother, Posy, an integral leader in the civil rights movement.
The varsity boys’ water polo team won its second straight Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) State Championship. The program is on an amazing run with 65 consecutive wins, including back-to-back state titles.
