LEAVING A LEGACY
Is this the Month YOU Will Decide to Leave A Legacy?
id you know that the month of May has been
nationally designated as Leave A Legacy month?
DIt helps draw awareness to the power individuals
have to create their own Legacy by making a gift
through their will or another planned giving option
– gifts that can continue to help change the lives of
people in need for generations to come.
At Samaritas, we are honored to recognize individuals
who have included us in their long-term plans as
Heritage Society members. Heritage Society members
help us meet the needs of the individuals and families
we serve each year, and also help build a solid
foundation for the future through gifts to the Carl E.
Thomas Endowment.
There are a number of considerations when you are
considering what is often described as “the ultimate
gift”. Heritage Society member, Ellen Batkie, shares
three reasons that were part of her decision – wise
stewardship, helping those in need, and ensuring the
future for their grandson. We were first introduced to
Samaritas through a friend at our church. Once I got
involved, I also became deeply committed to the work
and to the Mission.
Zachary
Being outdoors plays an important role in Zachary’s life. He enjoys swimming,
fishing, camping and riding bikes, and he dreams of visiting a cooler,
mountainous locale. Zachary says his favorite after-school activity is spending
time with friends riding bikes.

Through the years, more often than not, I have been
a volunteer for Samaritas in a variety of projects at
church, and a couple of times – including now, as a
Foundation Trustee. Because I see the results of what
Samaritas does and the people we help, I also believe it
is a good steward of its resources. I have always wanted
to see it grow, today and in the future.
Now, with a grandson of our own, the future is even
more important – and present – to us than ever. We
want him to grown up in a world where people care
about those in need, and want to help!
In addition, with a background in Finance, I understand
the importance of making the money we work for, also
work for us. Since we put our plans in place, we feel
like we have our house in order, and that is a very good
feeling to have. We can’t control everything, but we
can control how we use what we use what we have,
and how we use it to make a difference - both today,
and as a part of our legacy.
I am proud to be a member of the Samaritas Heritage
Society – and highly recommend it to others who
also want to continue to help vulnerable children,
individuals and families at risk, and seniors be
healthier, safer and happier for generations to come
through Samaritas programs and services.
