President
Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Durham Hall
207 Albion Street
SURRY HILLS NSW 2010
Dear Dr Harrison
I would like to inform you that the Australian Medical Council (AMC) has communicated the recent decision by its Directors to grant accreditation of the training, education and continuing professional development programs of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) to 31 March 2023 to the Medical Board of Australia. This enabled the Medical Board to make a decision on the approval of the programs of study for registration purposes.
The Medical Board has now informed the AMC that it has approved the RCPA’s specialist medical programs and training and continuing professional development programs in the recognised speciality of pathology until 31 March 2023, subject to conditions and progress reports.
The Medical Board approved the accredited continuing professional development programs and the training and education programs of the RCPA leading to fellowship of the RCPA in the recognised specialty of pathology and in the following recognised fields of specialty practice, as providing qualifications for specialist registration, to 31 March 2023:
 General pathology
 Anatomical pathology (including cytopathology)
 Chemical pathology
 Haematology
 Immunology
 Microbiology
 Forensic pathology
The Medical Board will announce this decision in a communiqué via its website: www.medicalboard.gov.au.
As an accredited provider, the College is subject to monitoring by the AMC Specialist Education Accreditation Committee (see section 4 of the AMC Procedures at http://www.amc.org.au/files/525611ebe5b6cd3de54b01cbf0c753f635521c6f_original.pdf
The Health Practitioner Regulation National Law provides that the AMC may grant accreditation if it is reasonably satisfied that a program of study and the education provider that provides the program of study substantially meet the accreditation standard approved by
24 April 2017
the Medical Board of Australia and the imposition of conditions on the approval will ensure the program meets the standard within a reasonable time – see section 48(1)(b) Health Practitioner Regulation National Law.
In accordance with the National Law, the AMC set conditions on the accreditation of the College’s programs, and gave dates by which the conditions are to be addressed. The AMC will seek annual progress reports from the College and the conditions on the College’s accreditation must be reported on, and addressed in the timeframe set by the AMC. In 2020, an AMC assessment team will undertake a review visit and report on the College’s progress in addressing the 2020 conditions and the College’s plans for addressing conditions in future years.
As part of the progress reporting process, a report on conditions is provided to the Medical Board of Australia. If conditions are not addressed by the date set by the AMC, the AMC reports this to the Medical Board of Australia. The AMC will also report if it is satisfied with the provider’s progress in meeting the conditions and if the reason for the delay is appropriate. If the AMC is not satisfied with the provider’s progress in meeting conditions, the AMC will investigate in accordance with section 4.4 if the AMC procedures.
The College’s 2017 progress report is due to the AMC on Friday 18 August 2017. The AMC will provide the progress report template shortly.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding this process. Yours sincerely
