MICROBIOLOGY TRAINEE WORKSHOP

Speci c topics covered included the aspects and utility of various sequencing techniques; designing and troubleshooting molecular assays; regulatory requirements for new assays, use of the MALDI-TOF in susceptibility testing, automation in molecular microbiology, and the role of cytokines and Toll like receptors in sepsis. The generous input of senior Scientists and Fellows with expertise in the  eld was appreciated. Of the 38 participants 25 were microbiology Trainees, 4 were Fellows,
6 Non-members.
VIRUSES IN MAY

The long running Viruses in May course presented the ninety participants with three days of virology, focussing initially on point of care testing (POCT ), emerging threats including parechovirus and encephalitis viruses, vaccines and new vaccine strategies, and on the  nal day Indigenous health and new technologies. Expert Speakers in POCT Quality Assurance included
Dr Tony Badrick (RCPAQAP), Dr Phil Britton viral encephalitis (Children’s Hospital Westmead) vaccine design and assessment Prof Kristine Macartney (NCIRS) and Prof Dick Strugnell (University of Melbourne). Small group informal discussions between participants and presenters encouraged robust discussion, and the focus was on how diagnostic and research virology contributes to preventing illness.
