This season
the IIBA
made a sig-
nificant trial
change with
the Cham-
pion of
Champions
competition.
Previously
players could qualify by winning a single,
pairs, triples or rinks tournament but could only enter in one discipline. This time tournaments win-
ners could enter two disciplines; singles or rinks on day 1 and pairs or triples or day 2 with the
winners qualifying for world bowls.
In the rinks, Gerry McCabe defeated Nick Haire in the
semi final while Andrew Lecky defeated Vera McHugh. The
final was dominated early by McCabe’s rink as they led 6 – 0
. Lecky’s rink came back to square the game going into the
last end and it went to the final bowl with Lecky winning 7 –
6.
In the singles Kevin Conroy defeated Pauline Beattie
12 – 4 while Ray Stubbs defeated Mark Beattie 9 – 6. The
final was a tightly fought game and link the rinks went to the
last end and last bowl with Conroy winning 7 - 6. Harold
Massey IIBA Chairman made the presentations to Kevin Con-
roy and Andrew Lecky's rink
Day 2 of the Champion of Champions saw the pairs and
triples section. In the triples quarter finals Peter Christie
defeated Aidan Corrigan 12 - 3, Jal Richardson de-
feated Mark Wilson 6 - 5, Danny McDonald defeated
Gary Burke 11 - 6 and Stephen McKinley beat Rachel
Cassells 10 - 2.
The semi finals saw wins for Peter Christie by 8 -
7 over Jal Richardson and Stephen McKinley by 7 - 6
0ver Danny McDonald. The final was not as tightly con-
tested as several of the earlier games with the Christie
triple always in control
as they ran out 11 -
winners.
In the pairs Pauline and Joe Beattie were surprisingly
beaten by Norman Rutledge 8 - 6, Martin Trainor narrowly beat
William Morrison 8 - 6, Ryan O'Neill surprisingly lost 10 - 9 to
David Beattie, while Johnny Grey again had a surprise 8 - 7 win
over Sean Trainor.
In the semi finals Norman Rutledge defeated Martin Trainor
12 - 6 while Beattie defeated Gray 7 - 5. The final was a tightly
fought throughout going to very last bowl with Rutledge coming
through 10 - 9 over Beattie. The winners of both competitions
qualify to represent Ireland at the next World Bowls.
