           MITCHELSTOWN WIN AT CONNA
           Conna Bowls Club staged the final session (Last Sixteen), of their annual
           licensed 3-Bowl Pairs Competition for the Conna Perpetual Shield  held in
           the Conna Community Hall.  The competition was once again a great suc-
           cess with 100 entries involving 200-players in action for the top prizes from
           all the leading clubs in the Cork Zone (I.I.B.A.)                                         From
                 At the Quarter final stage Conna’s  Noel Mulcahy & Pat Hogan beat                 Michael
           Douglas Community School’s S. & J. O’Driscoll; Grange/Frankfield’s  Phyllis
           & John Long beat the I.C.I.C.Y.M.A. duo of B. Shellard & M. Bracken; Mitchel-       O’Shaugnessy
           stown Dave Casey & Dick Cahill beat Douglas Community School’s C. Cremen & M. Boland. Com-
           pleting the round the S.M.O.T.H. pair of John & Annette O’Connell beat Douglas Community
           School’s Betty McCarthy & T. McCarthy.
                 In the Semi-finals, Grange/Frankfield’s Phyllis & John Long and Conna’s Noel Mulcahy &
           Pat Hogan were locked in a tremendous tussle which finished at 8 across but the Long’s scored
           a single on the extra end to give them a 9 - 8 victory. In the other semi and by the same 9 - 8
           scoreline, Mitchelstown’s Dave Casey & Dick Cahill beat Saint Marys on the Hill pair of John &
           Annette O’Connell, who fought all the way.
                 .As sometimes happens, the final was somewhat of a one-sided affair. After six ends Mitchel-
           stown’s Dave Casey & Dick Cahill had rattled up a 14 - 0 lead including a five on the fifth end.
           Grange/Frankfield’s Phyllis & John Long scored some consolation shots, with Mitchelstown win-
           ning 14 - 4.
                 The Umpires on duty for the final session were as follows:- Hazel Foley, Hazel Payne,
           Michael O’Regan & Michael J. O’Shaughnessy and at the conclusion of play Mary Scanlon the
           Conna Club Captain presented the prizes and Liam Hannigan Conna’s Chairperson presented
           the Perpetual Trophy to Dick Cahill the Skip of the winning team.

           BARRS SNATCH A LAST GASP VICTORY
           Carrigaline G.A.A. Bowls Club staged their annual licensed triples competition for the Michael
           Barry Perpetual Trophy over a 6-day period with the concluding session in the GAA pavilion.  100
           teams made up of 300 players competed for the title.
                 In the Quarter-finals, Carrigtwohill (D. Mulcahy) beat Carrigaline GAA (Tony Desmond, Kay
           Cooney & Maurice Hayes), Barrs (R. Murphy) beat Douglas Community School (Mabel Boland,
           Angela Lyons & Gerry Allen), Grange/Frankfield (J. Long) beat Conna  (U.H. Smith, Liam Hannigan
           & Bill Dineen) and Sacred Heart (G. Keane) beat Grange/Frankfield (Irene McCarthy
                 Liz. O'Connor & Michael Lee but this QF needed a sudden death extra end to find a winner.
                 At the Semi-final stage Barrs Margo Murphy, Tim Healy & Ray Murphy beat Carrigtwohill’s
           Denis Geary, Nora Mulcahy & Denis Mulcahy and in the other semi Grange/Frankfield Phyllis
           Long, John Swannick & John Long beat Sacred Heart (Chris O'Shaughnessy, Denis Keane &
           Geraldine Keane.
                 The question being asked in the Final was, could Phyllis & John Long make it two trophies
           in a row? However, the Barrs team had other ideas and a great battle ensued with the final swing-
           ing one way then the other. with just one end to go the Barrs triple were 5 - 7 down and it seemed
           that Grange/Frankfield might have one hand on the trophy but in a stunning finish Margo Murphy,
           Tim Healy & Ray Murphy scored a three to snatch victory for the Barrs team by 8 shots to 7.
                 The umpires on duty for the final session were Martin Bracken & Michael J. O'Shaugh-
           nessy. At the  conclusion of play Eileen Noonan presented the prizes and also the Perpetual
           Trophy to Ray Murphy, the Skip of the winning team.
