Short Mat in Nederland

In 2008 zag Frans Roberts dat er in België een WK Short
Mat Short Mat in Nederlandwerd gehouden. Hij heeft toen
eerst met de Nederlandse Bowls Bond (NIOBB) contact
opgenomen om te vernemen wat hij moet doen om mee te
mogen doen aan het WK Shortmat in 2010 in Schotland.
Na ontvangst van het antwoord heeft Frans contact
opgenomen met Wyn Jones. Frans is toen lid geworden van een Belgische club waar hij geregeld
ging oefenen. Samen met Gerard van Leuven had hij zich aangemeld voor de pairs. Jammer genoeg
had Wyn Jones de aanmelding voor het WK niet goed verwerkt, zodat Frans en Gerard niet waren
ingedeeld. Wel hebben zij wedstrijden gespeeld tegen reserve spelers van verschillende landen.
In 2012, 2014, 2016 en 2018 heeft Frans meegedaan aan het WK Short Mat. In al die jaren
hebben een of meerdere andere Nederlandse spelers meegedaan. Short Mat werd steeds bekender
en sommige verenigingen hebben een Short Mat aangeschaft of zelf gemaakt. Daarom is er een
voorzichtige groei van het aantal spelers dat naast bowls ook short mat speelt of alleen maar short
mat speelt.
Aan het WK 2022 in België hebben 20 Nederlandse spelers meegedaan. Voor de meeste
was het de eerste kennismaking met het niveau van spelen in de Ierland, Engeland, Zweden etc..Aan
het WK 2023 in Schotland hebben maar 4 Nederlandse spelers meegedaan, omdat de rest het te
duur vond.
Eind mei 2023 is het aantal personen dat (ook) shortmat speelt zo rond de 35 personen.
Alleen is de gemiddelde leeftijd van deze spelers ruim boven de 50 jaar en komt men nog ervaring
te kort, omdat men weinig mogelijkheden heeft om toernooien te spelen. In Nederland zijn er maar
een of twee shortmat toernooien op dit moment. De afstand om aan toernooien in België deel te
nemen is voor de meeste spelers te groot.
Begin mei 2023 is het eerste NK Shortmat Pairs georganiseerd in Oldenzaal. Daar hebben
14 teams aan meegedaan. Een viertal teams stak boven de rest uit en kwamen tegen elkaar uit in
de halve finale. In de finale versloeg het team Maus van Tol / Esther de Groot het team Frans Roberts
/ Robbie Roberts.In Nederland is het moeilijk om jongeren als lid te krijgen omdat de meeste
verenigingen overdag (maandag t/m vrijdag) moeten spelen. Daarnaast is bowls vaak onbekend en
spreekt het de jongeren nog niet aan.
Short Mat in The Netherlands

In 2008 Frans Roberts saw that a World Cup Short Mat was held in Belgium. He first contacted the
Dutch Bowls Association (NIOBB) to find out what he had to do to participate in the 2010 World Short
Mat Championships in Scotland. After receiving the reply, Frans contacted Wyn Jones. Frans then
joined a Belgian club where he regularly practiced. Together with Gerard van Leuven he had signed
up for the pairs. Unfortunately, Wyn Jones had not properly processed the registration for the World
Cup, so Frans and Gerard were not classified. However, they have played matches against reserve
players from different countries.
In 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018, Frans participated in the World Short Mat Championships. In
all these years, one or more other Dutch players have participated.
Short Mat became more and more famous and some clubs have purchased a Short Mat or made it
themselves. That is why there is a cautious growth in the number of players who play short mat or
only short mat in addition to bowls.20 Dutch players participated in the 2022 World Cup in Belgium.
For most it was the first introduction to the level of play in Ireland, England, Sweden etc.
Only 4 Dutch players participated in the 2023 World Cup in Scotland, because the rest thought
it was too expensive. At the end of May 2023, the number of people who (also) play short mat will
be around 35 people. However, the average age of these players is well over 50 years and they still
lack experience, because they have few opportunities to play tournaments. In the Netherlands there
are only one or two short mat tournaments at the moment. The distance to participate in tournaments
in Belgium is too great for most players.
