4 Cerne Abbas Charity Fundraising Competitions
Cerne Abbas Charity Fundraising Competitions
Every year Cerne Abbas SMBC holds a number of events to raise money for charity including
two competitions, the ‘Six of the Best’ and the Cerne Open Triples, a popular themed crossword
and various tombola’s and sales events at Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester. This year’s
nominated charity was once again Weldmar, a local cancer charity. A total of about £1,400
was raised for this worthy cause and the club would like to thank all those who contributed so
generously, participated and put so much effort into making these events a success. The com-
petitions were held on consecutive days over a weekend in late summer.

The competition proved to be a close affair indeed.
Each team played four games on a random basis, the
winner being the team with the highest points with shot
difference determining in the event of a tie.
Somerset’s Hadspen, twice winners previously,
finished third
with seven
points out of a

eight. Two
Winners Colyton Devon teams,
Pat & Ken Spiller Colyton and
Sidbury, fin-
and Peter Morgan
ished above
them, but last year’s runners-up, Colyton were the win-
ners with a superior shot difference.

Six of the Best
This year’s six teams comprised three from Dorset, last Andy Thompson, Eric Pavey
year’s finalists, Heatherlands, Blackmore Vale 2015
League Champions, Hazelbury Bryan and Wool. and Roy Vincent
There were two teams from Somerset,
three-time winners Templecombe and
Odcombe. Making up the six were last
year’s winners, Wonford, from Devon.
The competition format comprises three
rounds of Singles, Pairs and Triples, the
top two teams qualifying for the final.
The standard of play was again high
in this select invitation tournament and
unsurprisingly qualification for the final
was close. Both Wonford and Heather-
lands qualified on 13 points with Wonford
having a better shot difference.
Templecombe were third, one point
Winners Wonford behind, so the top three were the same as
Michael Ivings, Maggie Smith, Marie & Pam last year. However, Templecombe’s Triple
of Hazel & Alan Berry with Mike Pinkawa
Toleman, Thomas Perris, Simon Pridham
won the award for the Best Triple. The
Best Pair were Michael Hall & Mark White from Heatherlands and the Best Singles player was
Michael Ivings from Wonford.
The final proved a very close affair with changing fortunes throughout the three games.
Heatherlands’ Paul Gough beat Wonford’s Michael Ivings, who had won all his games.
