Positron Emission Tomography (P.E.T.) Patient Prep
All patients: No eating or drinking (except water) for at least 8 hours prior to scan. The last meal prior to scan should be high in protein, low carbohydrate. Drink 1-2 glasses of water prior to scan. Refrain from strenuous activity for 3 days prior to scan. Don’t smoke or drink caffeine for 12 hours prior to scan. Do take prescription meds as usual and drink plenty of water. Pregnant women and small children shouldn’t accompany patient. Avoid wearing any metal jewelry (belts, buttons, zippers).
Diabetic Patients: Same as above. Additionally, oral diabetic medications may be taken up to 4 hours prior to your scheduled appointment time. Insulin dependent diabetics may take insulin injections up to 2 hours prior to scheduled appointment time. If scan is scheduled before noon, patient should take half of the morning insulin dose injection, providing it be done 2 hours prior to scheduled appointment time. If scan is in the afternoon, you are advised to take your full dose of insulin injection, eat breakfast and be NPO after 8am. Please monitor your blood glucose. Ideal blood glucose levels should be between 110-160 mg/dL for all diabetic patients.
