Another source for wins has
been McLaren’s 2015 drive to
enhance patient safety and risk management through our new online “Safety First” program.
All hospitals have “incident reporting” systems for errors, injuries
or dangers, but traditionally these are paper-based, inconsistent programs that make it hard to draw useful lessons for improvement.
Safety First is a systemwide, electronic structure for reporting risk and safety issues that is built into the overall McLaren IT system. “There’s a Safety First icon on everyone’s computer desktop,” notes Sonja Wilcox-Barriel, McLaren Health Care vice president of insurance and risk. Just by clicking on this icon, anyone in the McLaren system can report a safety or risk incident online. The Safety First icon takes the user to 22 sub-icons arranged by the type of event, such as patient falls, and a report can be quickly completed. “Information
goes instantly to a risk manager,” says Wilcox-
Barriel. “It’s really easy to use, and we can now
start benchmarking incidents. We can’t  x
what we don’t know about, and the more events
that are logged, the more reliable the data.”
Another tool in this quality evolution has been our
expanding use of the Patient Centered Medical
Home (PCMH) throughout the McLaren system. Endorsed by the federal government as a future
primary care model, the PCMH has  ve main elements. Care must be comprehensive, it must be patient-centered, it is to be coordinated throughout the health care system, is must be accessible to the patient, and the focus must be on quality and safety.
