Violence, Successions, Social Security Disability,
Consumer and Bankruptcy are currently available.
● 2020 Substantive law series included FEMA training
following Hurricane Laura for civil legal aid and volunteer
attorneys and created 8 training videos and
corresponding training manuals for civil legal aid and
volunteer attorneys on issues arising from COVID-19,
including evictions and family law.
● In partnership with legal aid attorneys, district and city
court judges, LSBA past-president Barry Grodsky, and
the Lafayette Bar Association, hosted multiple virtual
training sessions and CLEs on the new eviction laws
under the Federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and
Economic Security Act. Sessions were attended by over
160 judges and Justices of the Peace and recordings
were made available for those that could not livestream.
● Hosted a CLE in Aug. 2020 on Re-entry Legislative
Updates attended by DOC, DA offices, PD offices,
legislative offices, advocates, and members of the
judiciary to educate people on the new laws reducing
legal barriers to people released from incarceration.
● Hosted the Disability Law CLE on November 22, 2019
which provided attorneys with in-depth training on
representing clients with disabilities.
• Hosted the Special Education Workshop in partnership
with Southern University Law Center on October 19,
2019 offering attorneys and members of the public an
opportunity to learn more about laws, policies, and
procedures relating to special education.
● 2021/2022 Substantive Law Trainings are being
provided on a rolling basis in conjunction with Justice
Fridays.
● 2021 Eviction Moratorium and Diversion Programs
training in partnership with legal aid attorneys, district
and city court judges, and LSBA past-president Barry
Grodsky was held in September.
▪ Coordinate the statewide legal services disaster response plan;
o Successfully tested new disaster response plan during
Hurricane Barry.
o The Disaster Preparedness and Response subcommittee has
met since March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,
