Page 4 - White Paper- Wage and Hour Laws
P. 4
• Employees must be paid weekly or biweekly, within six days of the end of
the pay period, meaning if a pay period ends on a Friday, the employee must
be paid no later than the Thursday of the following week.
• Employees who are exempt from overtime laws (see below) may be paid
monthly, if they so choose, but still must be paid timely.
• You may not deduct money from your employees’ paychecks except as
specifically authorized under the law. You may, of course, withhold taxes
and pre-tax payments for benefit plans, but should be very careful about
other kinds of deductions, such as deductions that cover expenses associated
with the employees.
• If you fire an employee, you must immediately pay that person for all time
earned as well as any accrued, unused vacation time. If the employee quits,
these amounts must be paid within six days of the last day of work.
• Officers and certain management personnel are considered “employers”
under the Wage Act and can be sued personally by an employee claiming a
violation.
