“Marian is the cornerstone of the community, and providing
the highest quality of care and service at all times, to all
members of the community, speaks to the heart of our
mission,” states David Ketelaar, MD, Medical Director,
Emergency Services. “With patient volume of the rise, the
Emergency Services Expansion Project is critical to our future;
we know that as our community grows, our volume continues
to grow, and we must grow with our community.”
When developing building plans for the new hospital over a
decade ago, hospital leadership had the visionary foresight
to anticipate an eventual Emergency Department expansion Emergency Department staff member wheels a patient into the unit.
and created shell space adjacent to the current Emergency
Department for this purpose. No one expected, however,
that this need would arise only three years after opening the
new hospital. Using this shell space, the first phase of the
expansion will add 50% more square footage to the Emergency
Department to improve efficiency and optimize service to the
community today and into the future.
Once the project is completed, a special feature will be a
pediatric track which will function as a pediatric emergency
department within the Emergency Department. Additionally,
the completed Emergency Department will include expanded
radiology imaging rooms.

community are going to use the Emergency Department for
some level of care. At Marian we are committed to providing
the very best care, the very best staff, and the very best
technology for our community when they need it.”
The Impact of Your Contribution RECENT AWARDS
The survival of emergency patients depends on the quality
and proximity to lifesaving emergency and trauma care.
To provide our community with the facilities, technology,
and medical experts of the future, the Marian Foundation
initiated the Emergency Services Expansion Project to raise
$2 million from community donations. Your support of the
Emergency Services Expansion Project is a sound investment
in the health of the community and will redefine emergency
care for Santa Maria and the Central Coast. In addition
to elevating the level of emergency care provided to all
community members, your contributions will also support
the eventual elevation of the medical center’s Level III
Trauma Center designation to Level II designation.
