WHEREAS, Ms. Bridges was born in Mississippi in 1954, the same year the
United States Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision ordering the
integration of public schools; and,
WHEREAS, her family later moved to New Orleans, where on November
14, 1960, Bridges began attending William Frantz Elementary School, single-
handedly initiating the desegregation of public education; and,
WHEREAS, her walk to the front door of the school, assisted by four
federal marshals and under the ominous threats of an angry mob, was
immortalized in Norman Rockwell’s painting “The Problem We All Live With”,
in Robert Coles’ book “The Story of Ruby Bridges”, and in the Disney movie
“Ruby Bridges”; and,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City
of East Lansing encourages citizens to participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. Day of Celebration on Monday, January 15, 2024 at the Lansing Center; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the City Council of the City of East Lansing
is committed to upholding and advancing the King Legacy of Justice and will
conduct policy in accordance with these values.
