WHEREAS: This document is signed and dedicated to celebrating the 44 Annual Memorial
Observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to honor his legacy and vision; and
WHEREAS: U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall once said, “The measure of a country’s
greatness is its ability to retain compassion in times of crisis”, which plays as the theme of this 44 th
annual celebration. The theme is coupled with the commitment of promoting Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr.’s principles of nonviolence to keep inspiring our communities and carry out his legacy; and
WHEREAS: During a time when racial discrimination and segregation was extreme, Dr. King maintained
a dream for a more diverse America. A country whose citizens were informed by love and understanding,
rather than hatred and fear; and
WHEREAS: After years of campaigning by activists, members of Congress and his wife, Coretta Scott
King, Dr. King became the first modern private citizen to be honored with a federal holiday in 1983. Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to nonviolence and interracial cooperation has been an inspiration
behind the teachings of the Dr. Martin Luther King Commission of Mid-Michigan, and;
WHEREAS: The aim of the Dr. Martin Luther King Commission of Mid-Michigan is to teach about
Dr. King’s principles and carry on his legacy; the Commission has been impactful through art exhibits,
essay and scholarship contests, community conversations, concerts, as well as their annual Day of
Celebration in hopes to bring our community together; and
WHEREAS: Through their endeavors, the Dr. Martin Luther King Commission of Mid-Michigan has
awarded over one-hundred thousand dollars in scholarships, as well as over sixty thousand dollars in
grants to different community service agencies. Through the Commission’s service leadership, as well
as through their teachings and standards, they inspire students throughout greater Lansing to be the best
versions of themselves every day.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Andy Schor, Mayor of the City of Lansing, by the power vested in me do hereby

proclaim January 15 , 2024, as:
“Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day”
in Lansing. I encourage all residents to take a moment to reflect on his life and teachings so we can all
contribute to furthering his mission.
