               P.O. Box 24112
               Lansing, Michigan 48909

               Dear Friends,

                                                               th
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 38 Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Day of
Celebration. This year, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan's theme is
“Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of
brotherhood´ Dr. King spoke these words during his historic ‘I have a Dream’ speech in 1963
on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC.

We honor Dr. King not only for the lessons he taught us and the important change he
inspired, but for the deep-seeded love he held for our nation and its future. It is that love that has
inspired generations of Americans to stay in the fight and to work to leave a better world for the
               generations after.

Dr. King once said, “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole
staircase, just take the first step.” His dream was a nation and a world that never stops striving to
be better, despite inevitable adversities and challenges we may face. We can never lose sight of
that dream that Dr. King instilled in us all because while his words live on, they remain
               absolutely vital today.

Right now, truth, democracy and equal treatment under the law – three pillars of Dr.
King’s legacy – are all under attack in communities across our country. This is why, as we honor
his life and legacy this MLK Day, we must recommit ourselves to service, and standing against
injustice for those without a voice. Furthermore, as we work to fight against injustices like
misinformation, voter suppression, and racial disparities, we must do so by taking that first step
               in faith, together.

                                                                      th
Again, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 38 Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day of Celebration and I look forward to continuing to work with you to realize Dr. King’s
dream of a more just nation.

                                                         Sincerely,

                                                       Gary C. Peters
                                                    United States Senator
