                              “Out of a Mountain of Despair, a Stone of Hope”
                                            -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.



            WHEREAS: On behalf of the City of Lansing, it is an honor to join the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
            Commission of Mid-Michigan for their 36  Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration; and

            WHEREAS: For nearly forty years, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan has
            memorialized Dr. King through not only this event, but as host to others throughout the year including a
            scholarship competition where more than $15,000 in scholarship funds are award to students who apply
            and are selected based on academic achievement and an essay where they are asked to reflect on its
            meaning both internally and externally; and

            WHEREAS: The theme for the 36  annual celebration, “Out of a Mountain of Despair, a Stone of
            Hope”, is taken from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and reminds us all that hope can be found
            even in the darkest of hours; and

            WHEREAS: We honor the legacy of Dr. King by focusing on bringing people together and breaking
            down barriers that have historically divided communities and the nation; and

            WHEREAS: On what would have been Dr. King's 91  birthday, we honor and remember that he
            devoted his life to advancing social justice, equality, and opportunity; and

            NOW, THEREFORE, I, ANDY SCHOR, MAYOR of LANSING, by the power vested in me do
            hereby proclaim January 18, 2021, as:
                                    “DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY”


            in Lansing. I encourage residents of Lansing to join me in honoring Dr. King by preserving and
            continuing his sacred legacy. I again thank the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan
            for their partnership in honoring, remembering and inspiring us through Dr. King’s life’s work and
            legacy.
