Understanding Futures
Future Contracts Symbols…
The Futures Contract symbols has three important elements:
1. The symbol of the underlying product
2. The symbol of the month traded or expiration month
3. The symbol of the year of the corresponding product traded
NOTE: Different charting platforms may express this information slightly differently. Please check
with the platform for details on each platforms specific symbol format for a product. Some platforms
require a “/” before a futures contract i.e. /GCF7 (where the 7 is for year, in this case 7 = 2017).
Also other platforms may use the number month format. For example, ES 03-17 (i.e. NinjaTrader) for
S&P Emini Futures March 2017 contract.
