Square lashing
KNOT SCORE
Whether you’re lashing a yard to the mast or making some kind of improvised Strength
shelter, the square lashing is the one you’ll use most often. Before you Security
start, though, you’ll need to sort out your wrapping from your frapping Diffi culty Tying

KNOT KNOW-HOW
Most lashings are made up of turns that
are either ‘wrapping’ or ‘frapping’. The
wrapping turns are applied fi rst, and
hold the poles together. The frapping
turns are then put around the wrapping
turns and serve to tighten them. A
simple rule of thumb is: ‘wrap thrice and
frap twice’. Wedges may also be used to
further tighten the lashing.
4 Tighten the turns and secure
the end with a clove hitch (page 32).
