KNOT KNOW-HOW
The traditional method of tapering a
splice is to ‘thin’ each strand with a knife
after the last full tuck. You can shave off
half the thickness, and put in one more
tuck, or you can shave off a third,
followed by a tuck, and then another
third, followed by a fi nal tuck. Another
method is to cut one strand fl ush and
tuck two strands, then cut another
strand flush, and tuck the fi nal strand.
4 Bring the right-hand strand up
against the chain. Wrap the middle
strand around its own and the
right-hand strand’s standing parts
until it meets the left-hand strand.

strand, and tuck the end through the the middle and left-hand strands
top of the knot. Cut the end fl ush flush and seal if necessary. Roll
and seal if necessary. the splice underfoot or pound it
