e stereotypes surrounding Waterloo students are that they are antisocial
nerds obsessed with grades while Laurier students are party-hard jocks who
don’t take school seriously. Both schools’ students are aware of these various
stereotypes, but how do they a ect their university lives?

“I find it very irritating“ said Jelena Pavlovic , a Health Studies
undergraduate. “Each student has their own goals and desires. It’s wrong to put
a label on someone for attending a certain school.”

ese stigmas are no secret amongst
the various students and professors. It
is not uncommon to hear faculty
   commenting on their perceptions of
   rambunctious Laurier students.
   English professor Daniel Bratton even
hypothesized that the students in his
UW class could not come up with
synonyms for the word drunk because https://uwaterloo.ca/news/news/univ
they did not go out and drink as much. ersity-waterloo-honours-its-top-co-
He added that “ ey would have to go op-students-including
down the road for that,” referring to
   Laurier.

Professor Bratton is not the only one https://www.narcity.com/ca/on/toront
who has made this type of comment. o/lifestyle/the-10-best-party-
We asked students at the University of universities-in-ontario
Waterloo what they thought about the
stigmas around them and there were
many di erent answers given. One
student gave their opinion stating “I
know that a lot of other people think
that Waterloo kids are a bunch of try
hards that only spend their time
studying, and it kind of sucks to be
labeled like that, I mean it’s definitely
not the way I want to be perceived.”
