Carlos Vara Luiz is a senior consult-
ant neurosurgeon, being the Head of the
Neurosurgery Unit and the Director of the
Neurosciences Field of the Central Lisbon
Hospital and University Center (CHULC).
Dr. Vara Luiz obtained his Medical
degree at the Faculty of Medicine of the
University of Lisbon, starting in 1976 and
finishing in 1982. Later, he enrolled in his
Neurosurgery residency training, which
he completed in 1991.
He is currently, and since 2017, the
President of the Portuguese Neurosur-
gery Specialty College of the Portuguese
Medical Association, and is a member of
the CHULC’s Medical Council and Ethics
Commitee. In 2015 and 2016, he was also
elected President of the Portuguese So-
ciety of Neurosurgery (SPNC), of which
he had previously been, between 2007
and 2010, Coordinator of the Training and
Teaching Commitee.
Between 2010 and 2016, Dr. Carlos
Vara Luiz taught at the European Associa-
tion of the Neurosurgical Societies (EANS)
Training Commitee. In the associative
field, he organized 7 conferences and sci-
entific meetings, 2 of which were at an in-
ternational level.
Throughout his impressive career, Car-
los Vara Luiz authored and participated in
more than 150 scientific studies, focusing
mainly in the field of Neuro-Oncology, and
performed more than 4500 brain surgeries.
