The iPitch Competition is a new competition, that started
in the 11th Edition of the iMed Conference and is aimed
at students currently attendind a Education institution,
who wish to have an internship with Speakers from
®
previous editions of the iMed Conference and have
interest in enhancing their soft skills. It revolves around
3-minute speech: participants are invited to elaborate a
self-promotion pitch directed at the desired internship
location, whether it is in London, with Professor Mervyn
Singer, or in Cambridge with Dr Olivia Remes.
WHAT IS A PITCH?
A pitch consists of a 3-minute oral presentation, in English, with no visual support, directed at the receiving Host, with the purpose
to convey why someone is the right person for the internship and, therefore, should be the chosen one.
This type of short communication, should include a personal introduction, motivations, the many applications of the research at
the internship destination, the student’s qualifications and some closing remarks.
But you shouldn´t be so confident with the content of your pitch. Your voice is important, the way you place it properly and the
way you pronounce your speech. You must have a fluent and coherent speech, conveying exactly the right message you’re trying to
get across the audience.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The iPitch Competition goes through different phases until the selection of the winners.
The 1 phase, called Pre-selection, takes place months before the congress. It consists in the submission, by the participants of
st
their pitch in video format – registrations were open until 31 of July. The videos are then watched and judged by a Jury A, who decides
st
and selects 5 applicants to be examined by the Host. Each of the hosts will approve de 5 applicants and then choose the 3 best
pitches. Then the 5 host approved applicants and the 3 favourites pitches are informed by mail of such results.
The 2 phase takes place during the congress and the 3 best pitches for each internship (6 in total) will do a Pitch for Jury B on the
nd
®
iMed Conference 12.0 – Lisbon 2020 competition day.
Prior to the final presentation, the 6 chosen pitches will be awarded a free Public Speaking Course by Speak & Lead, giving them
an opportunity to enhance their soft skills for competition day.
The Pitch will be assessed by the members of Jury “B" on predefined criteria. The final score is the average of the members’ score.
The best presentation of each modality receives the iPitch Competition Award (which will be available to finance the two
internship programmes, proportionally assigned to each student according to the location of the internship).
WHO ARE THE HOSTS?
The hosts of this iPitch Competition are Professor Mervyn Singer (Professor of Intensive care Medicine
at University College London) and Dr Olivia Remes (Researcher at Cambridge University), both speakers in
the 11th Edition of the iMed Conference.
