Mais il nous semble qu’il reste une place pédagogique pour un abécédaire en format de poche destiné aux étudiants soucieux de maîtriser les bases de l’exer- cice médical tout en connaissant les grands prédécesseurs.
Deux illustres gures doivent être citées en préambule : HIPPOCRATE et GALIEN.
Emile Littré, outre son fameux Dic- tionnaire de la langue française, a traduit quotidiennement pendant vingt trois ans les pages des dix volumes des Œuvres complètes d’Hippocrate, avec le texte grec en regard.
HIPPOCRATE (460-377 av. J.-C.) est né à Cos dans l’archipel des Sporades à l’est de la Grèce. il vécut au siècle de Périclès, contemporain de Socrate, de Platon, de Sophocle et d’Euripide ; par son père, il descendait d’Esculape.
il n’existe pas de portrait d’ HIPPOCRATE d’après nature. Ses qualités morales, bien connues dans son Serment, restent d’actualité : « le mé- decin doit être dévoué à ses malades: il doit leur prodiguer ses secours et ses consolations, être plein de douceur, de

HIPPOCRATES (460-377 B.C.) was born in the east of Greece on the isle of Cos in the archipelago of the Sporades. he was a contemporary of Pericles, Socrates, Plato, Sophocles and Euripides. he was a descendant of Aesculapius through his father.
No portrait of HIPPOCRATES during his lifetime exists. the moral qualities in his Oath are still valid today: « the physician must be devoted to his patients: he must help and console them, be meek, have grace, be tolerant of their whims, if they are harmless to them, neither should he uncover without neces-sity the intimate parts of the sick body to his assistants (...). he must hide to his patients what could befall them
