C. Line of Descent
1. Patrilineal- a system in which an individual’s kin group or clan membership is traced
through men.
2. Matrilineal- it is a tracing descent exclusively through females from a founding female
ancestor.
3. Bilineal- is a kinship system in which descent is traced through both maternal and paternal
ancestors.
D. Residence
1. Patrilocal- it is one in which a married couple lives with or very near to the man's parents.
2. Matrilocal- is one in which a married couple lives with or very near to the woman's parents.
3. Neolocal- a type of post-marital residence in which a newly married couple resides
separately from both the husband's natal household and the wife's natal household.
E. Dominance
1. Patriarchal- defined as the "rule of the father" that extends beyond the confines of the
family to include the governance of men and the dominance of male values in society as a
whole.
2. Matriarchal- a family, society, community, or state governed by women.
3. Equalitarian- characterized by social equality and equal rights for all people.
