P. 124

If you find yourself depressed you should by all means consult your family physician.
However, everyone feels a little blue sometimes, and honing your sense of gratitude
can make an important difference in your life and the lives of all those you come in
                   contact with each day.

I recently read about another unconventional approach to curing the blues. A woman
suffering from depression so she went to her Doctor for help. The usual medications
didn't seem to be working and the Doctor was running out of ideas. One day he had a
small package delivered to the woman's home. The package came with instructions to
take what was inside and spend ten minutes of every day looking through it at any
                   object in the room.

Wonder what was in the package? It was a strong magnifying glass. The woman took
the Doctor's advice and began looking through it daily. She sometimes gawked
through the glass for longer periods than the Doctor had originally prescribed. The
things saw so astonished her that this marked a turning point in her illness.

She started on the road to emotional wellness because the Doctor and his unorthodox
prescription had aroused one of the most healing emotions she had. Next to love,
gratitude may well be the most therapeutic emotion we feel. Getting in touch with
your sense of gratitude can be a potent prescription for inner peace.

By focusing more on the positive aspects of our lives, the negative aspects do not seem
quite so important. As well, even if you make just one daily entry of something you
are thankful for you, will begin to notice things that you had previously taken for
                   granted.

So, go ahead and start a gratitude or success journal soon. You may want to write
down one or two things everyday or as many as five or six. It really is up to you.
Practise on the space provided at the end of this chapter until you have a journal or
notebook specifically for this purpose. Once again, you will see that focusing on the
positive things in your life makes you feel so much more confident and ready to
overcome any obstacles that cross your path.
