P. 88

The next logical step in our journey towards being nicer is to do nice things for people.
These need not be grand gestures. In fact, most people appreciate the small thoughtful
things we do for them much more than the larger more calculated gestures.

An example of a small, yet thoughtful gesture would be to hold the door for an elderly
woman, or give up your seat on the bus to a lady with an armload of groceries. Even
though you may be pressed for time, try letting someone ahead of you in line at the
grocery store if they’ve only got a few items. You will be amazed at the reaction you’ll
get to a few simple acts of courtesy. Just like smiling, courtesy is also contagious so
you can expect that to spread quickly, as well.

By the time you’ve finished the worksheets for this chapter, at least three weeks will
have passed from today. In addition to smiling at people more often, being more polite
and courteous will have become second nature to you by then. When you see the
favourable responses you receive from your peers and strangers alike, and notice your
life begin to change, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do this many years ago.
