CURATORIAL STATEMENT

"Either Wrong or Right, Just Examine" is the fruit born of Evanston Art Center's

Inaugural Curatorial Fellowship of 2020-2021 awarded to Chicago duo Alpha M.

Bruton, Chief Curator of Phantom Gallery Chicago Network and Adero J Knott,

Disability/Accessibility Curator, and Founder of AK Prosthetics.

Bruton and Knott's artistic vision entails an intergenerational curatorial practice that

seeks to provide a model for emerging and established curators to innovate in

curating inclusive and accessible experiences for all, exhibiting artists from diverse

and intersectional backgrounds of Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Women,

LGBTQIA+ and Disabled people, and bridge together perspectives from all sides of

the spectrum to increase understanding, empathy, and connections.

Throughout the exhibition "Either Wrong or Right, Just Examine," Bruton and

Knott invited emerging and established artists and the Evanston Art Center

community to participate in a series of public dialogues facilitated by Bruton and

Knott and the exhibiting artists. These dialogues explored ways artists examine the

state of their environment through themes of Documentation, Spirituality, Racism

and Art as Wellness and the intersection of art and social justice – how do identity

and intersectionality affect our lived experiences as seen in the practice of an

                      artist?

We chose the title "Either Wrong or Right, Just Examine" to allow all

perspectives and lived experiences to be shared and heard. There is no binary,

and there are no wrong or right answers, just examinations.
