P. 36
3-DIGIT SUBTRACTION (WITH REGROUPING)
4
Subtract 138 from 56.
Step 1. We cannot subtract 8 from 6 in the ones (O) column.
H T O So, we borrow 1 ten from the tens (T) column.
4
16
4 5 6 Now, we have 1 ten + 6 ones
– 1 3 8 = 16 ones under the ones (O) column.
16 ones – 8 ones = 8 ones
3 1 8 Write 8 under the ones (O) column.
4
Step 2. In the tens (T) column, we are left with tens.
Subtract the digits under the tens (T) column.
4 tens – 3 tens = 1 ten
Write 1 under the tens (T) column.
Step 3. Subtract the digits under the hundreds (H) column.
4 hundreds – 1 hundred = 3 hundreds
Write 3 under the hundreds (H) column.
4
The difference between 56 and 138 is 318.
4
Find the difference.
