IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT DIVISION
Dividing 0 and dividing by 0
4
(a) Suppose you want to divide 0 by . Think of multiplication to help you.

0 ÷ = . What number of times equals 0 → 0 × = 0
Whenever we divide 0 by any number, we always get 0 as the answer.
(b) Suppose you want to divide 3 by 0.
3 ÷ 0 = . What number of times 0 equals 3?
There is no such number. No answer is possible. We cannot divide by 0.
Dividing by 1
When you divide any number by 1, the quotient is the number itself.
36 ÷ 1 = 36; 286 ÷ 1 = 286
Dividing by 10
(a) When we studied to multiply a number by 10, we put one zero at the
right of the number — 5 × 10 = 50. Whereas, when we divide a number
having 0 in the ones place by 10, we remove the 0 to get the quotient.
50 ÷ 10 = 5 Quotient = 5
(b) When we divide a number that has some other digit in the ones place
by 10, the digit in the ones place becomes the remainder.
256 ÷ 10 The digit 6 in the ones place becomes the remainder.
Quotient = 25; Remainder = 6
Placing of Zero in the Quotient of Division
4
Divide 7 9 by 7.
H T O Step 1. Hundreds column: 7 ÷ 7 = 1
1 0 7 Quotient = 1, Remainder = 0
4
4
7 7 9 Step 2. Tens column: < 7
4
– 7 Add 0 after 1 in quotient and place 9 along with .
4
4 9 Step 3. 9 ÷ 7 = 7
– 4 9 Add 7 after 0 in quotient.
0 Quotient = 107; Remainder = 0
