  General Robert E. Lee
General Robert E. Lee was brought to command the Northern Virginia Confederate Army on June 1, 1862. Following the second Battle of Manassas (also known as Bull Run) General Lee sustained injuries to both of his wrists – one sprained and one broken - when his horse, Traveller, bolted causing Lee to fall. On September 4, 1862 Leesburg welcomed the Army of Northern Virginia including a horse drawn ambulance carrying General Lee.
Lee was treated for his injuries at Harrison Hall by Dr. Samuel Jackson who lived next door. While recovering at Harrison Hall, General Lee stayed in the room on the second floor just next to the master bedroom and his beloved horse, Traveller, was housed in the estates stables. In the third-floor bedroom Lee’s lieutenants created a lookout post by cutting a hatch in the ceiling to gain views of solider movement around Leesburg.
The following day Lee held a war council in the dining room of Harrison Hall known as the “Meeting of the Generals”. Here they discussed the plans for the invasion of Antietam, Maryland (the bloodiest one day battle on American soil). In attendance were General Lee, General “Stonewall” Jackson, General James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart, General James Longstreet, and General Lewis Armistead.
