billiard room was, continued east and through a second door, separating the old vaults from the basement of the trappgavelhuset. Here, Ulfeldt was probably left alone for a while, while D'Aranda went to get a carriage and horses to take Ulfeldt to Lübeck.
Leonora Christina, disguised as a citizen or a farmer's wife, unnoticed left the garden through the gate at Kyrkogatan. At the same time, her hus- band Count Ulfeldt, assisted and followed by his loyal D'Aranda, mana- ged to escape unseen through the aforementioned cellar door at Adel- gatan and through the nearby Strandporten, down to the ferry bridge, where a rowboat in readiness took him out to a sloop, which immediately sailed south. After the escape of the spouses, D'Aranda returned to the Ulfeldt's house and probably did his best to keep what had happened a secret. However, as soon as Ulfeldt got out to sea, he made the fateful de- cision to change his plans and sail to Copenhagen. Upon arrival the same day, he checked in at the home of Major Frants Spechhan of the infantry regiment, whose wife Birgitte had been in Leonora Christina's service for several years and was warmly devoted to her and Ulfeldt. A week later, on July 23 or 24, Leonora Christina also arrived in a boat in Copenhagen, after hiding in the city for some days after the escape from her home in Malmo, probably with someone she knew, until an opportunity to travel to Copenhagen presented itself.
