Hi Times Brittany Colt - Continued from Page 7
During the post breeding exam to determine pregnancy a large growth on one of her ovaries was discovered and she was immediately sent for surgery. Equine surgeon Dr. Orlaith Cleary removed the one ovary containing a large cancerous tumour, a type of tumour which is dif cult to diagnose and likely would have gone undetected had she not been bred.
In March 2017, Hi Times Brittany was bred again to Souper Speedy and despite only having one ovary, the mare caught rst time and eventually gave birth to a colt born at the farm on February 13, 2018.
Any attempts to breed the mare again were put on hold after she suffered a severe impaction this winter and instead Hi Times Brittany became a nurse mare for an orphaned Old Forester lly.
Hi Times Brittany’s colt by Souper Speedy will be offered as Hip 113
in the upcoming CTHS Canadian Premier Yearling Sale on August 29 at the sales pavilion at Woodbine. Like his mare, he is a well mannered and easy going colt. Ballycroy Training Centre has a consignment
of 11 in the upcoming sale and like all breeders the Kemps are hoping that the good looking individual will sell well and nd good owners to race him.
Souper Speedy by Indian Charlie - Speed Succeeds, by Gone West entered stud at T.C. Westmeath in Ontario in 2015. His rst crop are three year olds this year and he is well represented by top performers: 3 year old gelding SOUPER SUCCESS, 2019 Woodstock Stakes winner and 2nd in the King Corrie Stakes last month; 3 year old lly SPEEDY SOUL, winner of the 2019 Fury and Bison City Stakes; 3 year old lly CIURI, winner of the 2019 Lady Angela Stakes; and 3 year old colt SOUPER HOT, winner of the 2019 Bold Ruckus Stakes.
100 Years Ago Man o’ War’s Upset
By Mike Mullaney
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The con uence of the number 13 and the word “upset” came into play perfectly Aug. 13, 1919, in a race that gave birth to Saratoga’s oft-repeated citation as “The Graveyard of Favorites.”
Bad luck was a key ingredient to the only defeat of Man o’ War, whose talents, even as
a youngster, were considered otherworldly.
That the Sanford S. was won by a horse coincidentally named Upset adds to the story.
