New Apprentice at Woodbine
Dean Deverell began riding horses at the age of 10 and began galloping race- horses a couple of years later at the farm of trainer John MacKenzie. A couple of years after that he was galloping for John at the racetrack.
Dean had always dreamed of becoming a jockey and nowattheageof35,heis getting his chance.
So why did he wait so long?
Due to the fact that Dean started gallop- ing so young, by the time he reached the
age of most apprentices, he had built up too much muscle mass to make weight.
To help quench his thirst for racing Dean became a Quarter Horse jockey in 1995 while continuing to gallop thoroughbreds for various trainers.
After his wife, trainer Siobhan Deverell, gave birth of their first daughter in 2001, Dean gave up the quarter horses to focus on family and running his father-in-law, Alfred
Ferreira’s farm.
Dean had made the decision to return to
quarter horse racing this season and began losing weight in preparation. He surpassed the weight he wanted to lose and then decided to keep going and get to riding weight for thoroughbreds.
Dean received his apprentice license complete with a 10lb weight allowance and was scheduled to ride three races at Fort Erie on April 30.
Dean is represented by agent Mike Langlais.

Fort Erie Exercise Rider Holly Dapp Seriously Injured
Long time exercise rider, Holly Dapp, was seriously injured March 31 when the 2-year-old she was riding, who was being ponied by trainer Paula Loescher, spooked and flipped, crushing her underneath.
Holly was rushed to ECMC Hospital in Buffalo, NY where it was determined that she had sustained four fractured vertebrae, cracked ribs, a collapsed lung, severe damage to her liver as well as other internal injuries.
Holly currently does not have any feeling from her rib cage down and will likely remain in hospital for at least eight months.
According to her parents, Russell and Donna Dapp, the doctors have told Holly that she might not walk again however they say she is a fighter and is determined to overcome her injuries, “The track has been behind us 110%.” said Donna,
“Everybody has been here for her. There has been a lot of internal support from the racetrack.”
The Dapp family has been involved in racing for more than 40 years with Donna and Russell having met on a racetrack backstretch in 1964. Starting out in Alberta, they gradually moved East through Saskatchewan and Manitoba to land at Fort Erie racetrack eleven years ago.
“We have had calls from California, British Columbia and Florida,” said Russell as he held back tears for his daughter, “She told me ‘I may never walk again but it won’t be from not trying.’”
Holly has two sons, Gavin, age 12 and Marshall, age 13 and is expected to be moved to a hospital in Hamilton. Everyone wishes Holly the best in her recovery.
