Trainer Kelly Callaghan leading Starresha out of the barn at Woodbine
Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Kelly Callaghan began working for trainers Ken McPeek and Rusty Arnold at Gulfstream Park, and Steve Asmussen at Oaklawn Park before returning to Canada to work at Fort Erie Race Track where she worked for trainer Paul Nielsen for 10 years. Kelly began training horses in 2009.
Goldstryke Glory was transferred to Kelly’s barn
at Woodbine in 2013 and provided her with her rst stakes win as a trainer. She has trained horses for the Holmes’ at Woodbine ever since. Read more here
Kelly and her husband, Jockey Slade Callaghan, wintered with the horses in training at Eugene Melnyk’s Winding Oaks Farm in Ocala, and racing at Gulfstream Park in Florida.
Kelly and Slade returned to Woodbine in early April and among the horses returning with them was the Phoenix Rising Farm bred Starresha who has since been making quite a stir at the track due to her noticeably unique colouring. The two year-old lly by Second in Command is out of the mare Painting Shadows, (by Airdrie Apache,1993 bred by Brereton Jones) who is also quite uniquely coloured.

Stolonboy Actively Retired
Purchased as a yearling, Stolonboy was a xture in the barn of Trainer Joe Walls for more than ten years. In his later years, the hard knocking, character of a horse was well known on the backstretch for his calm demeanor and for eavesdropping on conversations along the rail.
“Stolonboy would happily stand a listen to the stories being told along the rail.” said owner Carol Walls (married to Joe) who said that son Mickey Walls would take his time with Stolonboy while out of the barn for training, “He would stand all day before training if you let him but coming off the track after training it was hard to get him home because he was showing off and feeling good.”
From dumping Mickey and getting loose to laying down fully tacked while tied to the wall, in the early years Stolonboy was tough to manage. “It took some time for him to mature and for us to gure out that he was a true distance horse,” said Carol mentioning that once he started running the longer distances he ran consistently in the money. “He’s a rst class character and the last couple of years I would get emotional when he was running thinking ‘how can a horse try so hard for you’”.
His antics continued off the track. Stolonboy never wanted to wear a blanket during the cold winter months and even going as far as to undo the blanket buckles of his paddock mates. “Stolonboy was always on the pudgy side and had long hair due to his hatred of blankets,” said Carol with a laugh, “He didn’t look like your typical distance horse.”
Stolonboy was being pointed to run in the nal distance race of 2016 however with Mickey getting hurt the Walls felt that he wasn’t conditioned enough and instead packed up for the season. After 10 years and 90 career starts Stolonboy was of cially retired
from racing. The Walls’
wanted him to go somewhere that would keep him interested and be given something to
do. At a friend’s recommendation he was sent
to Melissa Panjer’s Millside Stable and in true Stolonboy fashion he has already taken to jumping fences with air.
