2005 Canadian Thoroughbred Ratings
The International Federation of Horse Racing Authorities, World Thoroughbred Rankings panel met last December in Hong Kong to compile the 2005 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings. The conference is the official end of season assessment of the top horses that raced or trained in countries whose season ran from January 1 to December 31. Chris Evans, Vice President of Thoroughbred Racing at Woodbine Entertainment sits on that panel. In 2004, Evans developed the Thoroughbred ratings system for Canada to replace the Canadian Free Handicap.
The Canadian Thoroughbred Ratings are determined by applying a criteria similar to that used by the World Thoroughbred Rankings panel to rate horses using the following distance categories: Sprint • Mile • Intermediate • Long • Extended, other- wise know by the acronym - SMILE.
Sprint ratings cover races up to seven furlongs. Mile distances include those greater than seven furlongs and less than 1-3/16 miles. Intermediate distances range from 1-3/16 miles to 1-5/16 miles. In the Canadian system, the Long and Extended categories are combined and cover any distance longer than 1-5/16 miles. Weight concessions and a beaten-lengths formula are factored into the ratings as well. Any horse that competed in a Canadian stakes in 2005 was eligible to be rated on his best performance, in any distance category, anywhere in the world.
Leroixdesanimaux who ranks 9th in the World Thoroughbred Rankings attained a rating of 124 for his performance in the Atto Mile G1 at Woodbine last September. Relaxed Gesture who ranks 21st in the world received a rating of 122 for his performance in the Pattison Canadian International G1 at Woodbine.
Honey Rider received a rating of 112 in the Intermediate turf
category for her win in the E.P. Taylor Stakes G1 at Woodbine. Soaring Free, the top rated Canadian horse, received a rating of 113 for his performance in the Scotts Highlander Handicap G3 at Woodbine. A Bit O’Gold, Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2005, received a rating of 112, for his performance on the turf, in the 1-3/8 miles Chinese Cultural Centre Stakes G2 in July at
Woodbine.
Mobil leads the Sprint dirt category with 108 for his second
place finish in the Vigil Handicap G2. Cryptograph heads the list for Mile dirt category with 108 for his win in the Woodbine Slots Cup Handicap G3.
In the Intermediate dirt category, A Bit O’Gold earned 109 for his performance in the Dominion Day Handicap G3; Wild Desert, winner of The Queen’s Plate also earned 109. Seattlespectacular tops the Long dirt category with 105 for his win in the Valedictory Handicap at Woodbine.
Two-year-olds are not ranked by distance or surface but are assigned a rating for their best performance. First on the filly list with 106 is Canada’s Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, Knights Templar, and winner of the Mazarine Breeders’ Cup Stakes G3.
Four colts, tie for top spot in ratings for two-year old males with 105. Canada’s Champion Two-Year-Old Male in 2005, Edenwold, for his performance in Vandal Stakes in August. Seaside Retreat for his performance in the Display Stakes, Bear’s Kid for this performance in the Summer Stakes G2 and Badge of Truth for his second place finish in the Grey Breeders‚ Cup Stakes G3.

News in Review
Prominent thoroughbred owner, Bob Lewis, passed away peacefully from heart failure at his Newport Beach, California, home on February 17. The 81 year-old was reported to have been in declining health for some months. Bob is survived by his wife, Beverly, and their three children, Jeff, Nancy and Jimmy.
Bob and his wife built up their stable of horses purchasing yearlings at the sales and had enjoyed much success with horses such as Eclipse Award winners Timber Country (1994 2-year-old male), Serena's Song (1995 3-year-old filly), Silver Charm (1997 3-year-old male), Charismatic (1999 3-year-old male), Orientate (2002 sprinter), and Folklore (2005 2-year-old female).
They captured an Eclipse Award themselves as Outstanding Owners in 1997.
Bob Lewis had followed his father into the brewing industry in Northern California and he first ventured to the racetrack at Santa Anita as a child with his parents in the 1930’s.
Santa Anita has plans to rename its G2 Santa Catalina Stakes in honour of Bob to the Robert B. Lewis Memorial in 2007.
Owner of Lawyer Ron found dead
James T. Hines Jr., the owner of Triple Crown
Contender, Lawyer Ron, was found dead in the indoor swimming pool at his home in Kentucky on February 20. Foul play was not suspected and an autopsy was scheduled. Lawyer Ron, by Langfuhr, most recently won the $250,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn on February running in the name of the 69-year-old’s estate.
Mahmoud Fustok, owner of Buckram Oak Farm, was killed on February 8 in Pompano Beach, Florida.
Mahmoud and Antoine Mardini were jogging along the road when they were struck by a man in a SUV who was apparently having a diabetic seizure. The 56-year-old dri- ver of the vehicle drove a block further before crashing into a fire station. All three were taken to hospital.
Fustok, who came to the US from Lebanon in the late 1950’s became involved in horse racing in 1978. He most recently had his biggest success with Silver Train, winner of the BC Sprint in 2005.
Other horses of note include Najran, Anifa, homebred Eurosilver, Last Song, Mint, Noble Fighter, Natural Selection, Star Gallant, and Silver Wagon.
He is survived by a brother, Mustapha Foustok, who is also involved in the horse business.
