Emma-Jayne wins Eclipse
Emma-Jayne Wilson, the first woman to win the Woodbine jockey title, was crowned the Eclipse Award champion as the continent's outstanding Apprentice rider on January 23 in California.
The 24-year-old is a deserved winner. The Bramalea native led all North American apprentices in wins and purse earnings.
She recorded 175 victories and nearly $7.5-million in purse earnings at Woodbine. Wilson also set a record for the most rides at the racetrack with 1,096, over 300 more than her nearest competitor.
Last month, she collected the Sovereign Award as Canada's Outstanding Apprentice Jockey.
Wilson was up against another Canadian, Justin Stein and the New York-based, Channing Hill.
She became the third Canadian to win an Eclipse, which honours the best in Thoroughbred racing, in the Apprentice category. Mickey Walls collected the award in 1991, while Neil Poznansky earned the title in 1996. She also became the second female to win the Eclipse Award for riding joining Rosemary Holmeister Jr. who won the award as an apprentice in 1992.
After accepting the award Emma-Jayne was quoted in the Toronto Star as saying, “I just hope this is a good sign of many more good things to come.”
Vote Totals in Outstanding Apprentice Jockey category: Emma-Jayne Wilson, 185; Channing Hill, 42; Justin Stein, 11.

Equine Herpes Outbreak in U.S.
Two equine facilities in Kentucky; Turfway Park in Florence and Western Kentucky Training Center in Henderson, have experienced equine herpes virus type 1 (EHV-1) outbreaks in January. In addition eight horses stabled at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD have either tested positive or are suspected of EHV-1 infection since January 2. And a positive test at Laurel on January 25 has prompted a Maryland state quarantine.
EHV-1 commonly causes respiratory disease, however it can also affect the central nervous system resulting in various levels of paralysis. Horses with mild signs have a chance at recovery however horses who become unable to stand have a poor rate of survival.
There is no effective treatment once a horse has been infected, the only defense is prevention by reducing the risk of spreading the disease. Limiting or thoroughly disinfecting shared equipment, such as water buckets and bits.
Some horses may become infected without showing clinical signs and become carriers of the disease.
Because of the outbreak in the U.S. and the deadly consequences it can bring to a horse population Woodbine’s Director of Racing, Tom Cosgrove, has said that trainers shipping their horses back to Woodbine may be required to provide veterinary paperwork regarding the EHV-1 virus.
The race office will be meeting with ORC veterinarians at the beginning of February to discuss the appropriate actions to be taken to ensure the safety of the horse population stabled at Woodbine. For information call the Woodbine Race Office at 416-675-7223.
