Thoroughbred Bloodlines a Work of Art
Inspired by the research and hand written compilations of Thoroughbred Lines by Geoffrey Skeete in Barbados, Rodney Jones spent nearly a year compiling his own nished work of the Bloodlines of Champion
Thoroughbreds.
connected to horses until later in his life. A successful businessman and investor Rodney began breeding Thoroughbreds at his farm after acquiring the stallion Happy Boy by Never Bend. He brought over several
Starting with the original three stallions, the Byerley Turk (c. 1680), the Darley Arabian (c. 1700) and the Godolphin Arabian (c. 1724) the intricate colourful print shows the Darley Arabian line which includes Canadian sire Northern Dancer, dominates todays sires lines in Great Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand as well as North America.
Rodney has documented both the male and female G1 winners worldwide spanning 334 years to
the Champions of 2014 including this years Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming along with Classic Empire and Irish War Cry each from the Mr. Prospector line as well as McCracken from the Northern Dancer line and Gunneverra from the Bold Ruler line.
mares from England and was successful with the rst crop of foals by his stallion. Trouble Maker, by Happy Boy, was trained by now Woodbine jockey agent Ron Burke, and was a winner of the Barbados Derby.
Rodney also raced in the United States winning multiple races and the Miss Dade and Virginia Handicaps with Florida- bred lly Hiusoanso at Calder in the early 1980’s.
Throughout the years Rodney’s interest in Thoroughbreds has not waned and in fact his research and dedication to plotting the Bloodlines of Champions has only been heightened.
Some of the interesting facts that can be seen in his work:
The Byerley Turk line died out in the late 1960’s with 1968 My Swallow (GB) representing the last Champion of that line.
The Godolphin Arabian line’s last Champion representative is 2004 Honour Devil (ARG) by Honour and Glory (USA).
Everything racing today comes from the Darley Arabian line. The progeny
of Mr. Prospector is dominant throughout the United States and Canada. Dubai Millennium (GB) a son
of Seeking The Gold (USA) had injected the line into Great Britain and Ireland however there has not been a Champion in that branch since 2012. Northern Dancer’s progeny spans one quarter of the chart with sire lines still prominent today in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Great Britain.
On a visit to Canada to promote his Bloodlines of Champion Thoroughbreds work (next page) Rodney Jones (left) visited with friend Anthony Reid, a Groom for Mark Casse at Woodbine.
Rodney’s work is inclusive of Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming as well as participants Classic Empire, Irish War Cry, McCracken and Gunneverra.
Originally born in Guyana
to natives Harry and Joan
Jones, the family moved
to Barbados when Rodney
was six months old. His
brother Challenor went by
the name of Chally and
was a successful, well
known jockey in Barbados,
Trinidad, Tobago and Guyana. Chally is the father of Jockey Jono Jones who had a successful career riding for a decade at Woodbine in Canada before retiring from race riding in 2011. Both Jono and current Champion Jockey Patrick Husbands learned to ride at Chally’s Thoroughbred breeding farm.
Growing up, the Joneses lived close to Garrison Savannah racetrack however Rodney was not
