Canada’s Thoroughbred Racing Newspaper The Game, March 2007 37 Out of Town
It was a terrific month for Canadian Connections winning south of the border. The highlight has to be the Catherine Day Phillips’ trained Jambalaya winning the G1 $300,000 Gulfstream Park Breeders’ Cup Turf Stakes on February 24. A terrific nail-biter of a race was won by a very determined runner. Congratulations to the connections. We look forward to seeing Jambalaya back at Woodbine for more exciting racing this season.
Here are the other Canadian connections who had wins this month:
Aqueduct - Jamaica, New York:
Owners Mario Forgione and Lou Donato had a win with their New York bred, Martinspike on February 22 with conditioner Michael Hushion.
Beulah Park - Grove City, Ohio:
Owner Bruno Schickedanz had a couple of wins with 4-year-old gelding, Highland Jan under the guidance of trainer Jeffrey Radosevich. He won for a $4,000 claiming purse on both January 29 and February 23.
Charles Town Races & Slots - Charles Town, West Virginia: Bruno Schickedanz in partnership with
Walter Baker had a win with Romance By Rail for a $16,000 claiming purse on February 3. The conditioner was Ernest Haynes.
Delta Downs - Vinton, Louisiana:
Jockey Jeffery Burmingham has been winning in bunches in Louisiana recording 3 wins on January 26, a pair of wins on February 16, another 3 wins on February 22 followed up by a win each day on February 22 and 23. One of his wins on January 26 was aboard Daddy Warbucks in the $50,000 Triple Sec. Stakes for a leading trainer in Louisana, Danny Pish. Jeffery’s total purse earnings were $190,500.
Fair Grounds Race Course -
New Orleans, Louisiana: Woodbine’s 2006 Leading Jockey,
Emma-Jayne Wilson, was involved in a nasty spill at the beginning of February however it didn’t take long before she was back and winning races. Since last month’s report Emma has had nine wins for US connections for purses totalling $252,000.
Emma was also aboard $43,000 Maiden Special Weight winner, Her Excellency, on January 26 for trainer Mark Frostad and owner Sam-Son Farm.
Trainer Malcolm Pierce had two winners, Unto the Hills with Emma-Jayne aboard for MSW $43,000 for Noreen Taylor, Lessee on February 3. His other win was with Idle Rumor for a $47,500 claiming purse for owner Pin Oak Stable.
Golden Gate Fields -
Albany, California:
Trainer Edward Freeman had a win
with the Ontario bred filly, Higher Love for a claiming purse of $9500 on February 10. Eddie owned the horse in partnership with Weila Ye and Goldie Stable.
Gulfstream Park -
Hollywood, Florida:
Trainer Brian Lynch had a win late in
January for owner Stronach Stables with Feisty Woman in an allowance $46,000. After that Jody Hammett’s win with Johnny Hollywood for $11,000 on February 8 was the only Canadian connection to win in the first half of the month. Hammett owns the Kentucky bred filly in partnership with Gerald Attard.
By mid-month there were some recognizable names in the win column.
Trainer Chantal Paquette had a win for her father’s Majestic Thoroughbreds with Royal Domain for a claiming purse of $14,000 on February 15.
Trainer Nick Gonzalez had a winner on President’s Day with Winning Appeal for owner Mike Colt. The 3-year-old filly won for a claiming purse of $14,000. Trainer Roger Attfield also had a win that day with Red Birkin for MSW $44,000 for owner Haras Santa Maria de Araras.
Nick Gonzalez visited the winner’s circle again on February 24 with Neuf de Carreau winning the claiming purse of $21,000 for owner Tucci Stables. The 7-year-old gelding was also claimed out of the race for $25,000.
Flashy n’ Bold was claimed for $12,500 after winning her share of the $12,000 purse money for owner Wallace Racing Stable and trainer Barbara Baird on February 23.
Jambalaya topped off the month with a terrific win in the G1 $300,000 Gulfstream Park Breeders’ Cup Turf Stakes on February 24 for trainer Catherine Day Phillips and her own Kingfield Farms.
Laurel Park - Laurel, Maryland:
Trainer Edward Allard had a win for owner Hall Snowden Jr. with Single Sleeper winning for $10,780 claiming on February 24.
Mountaineer Race Track -
Chester, West Virginia
Since our last report rainer Mike
Newell has recorded three more wins. February 10 with Lovely Senorita for a claiming purse of $11,000; February 12 with Simmer Down for a claiming purse of $10,400 and February 24 with Jazzy Russian also for a claiming purse of $10,400. Sweet Breeze finished first and was disqualified to third on February 19 in a $10,400 claimer. Mike is listed as owner of each horse.
Trainer and owner Don MacRae had a couple of wins this month with
Bolddelivery on February 11 for a claiming purse of $10,900 and Tinker’s Hope on February 24 for a claiming purse of $11,200.
Trainer and owner Debra Rombis had two wins; the first with Windcauseruckus on February 18 for $10,100 claiming and the second with Windfleur for $11,100 claiming.
Trainer and owner Kevin Buttigieg had a win February 17 with Stormy Entrance for $11,900 claiming purse.
Trainer Leslie Frost had a win for owner Albert Sanges for $10,400 claiming on February 20.
Ocala Training Center -
Ocala, Florida
The Ocala Sales Stakes series was held
earlier than usual this year on February 12. The Canadian connections who participated this year had relatively poor showings compared to previous years.
Trainer Mark Casse had a last place finish with Skip Code in the $100,000 Champion Stakes. Ridden by Patrick Husbands, the horse broke through the starting gate before the start and was a non factor in the race afterwards. Howaboutrightnow, with Emma-Jayne Wilson in the irons, finished fourth in the $45,000 Distaff Stakes. The horse is owned by Mark Casse’s father Norman.
Trainer Arthur Silvera didn’t fair any better with a ninth place finish with Wonder Time in the $100,000 Championship Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Pete’s Wonder finished fourth in the $50,000 Sprint Stakes. Both horses were ridden by Richard Dos Ramos for owner Hidden Point Farm.
Philadelphia Park -
Bensalem, Pennsylvania:
Trainer Maggie Couse and owner
Scott Fairlie teamed up for three more wins: January 27 with Misty Parade; In Kim’s Honor on January 30, both for $10,500 claiming each; and Roux Be Wild on February 18 in a $30,000 Allowance.
Sam Houston Race Park -
Houston, Texas:
Coming off of his Stakes win in
January, Fairwell Madrid scored another for owner and trainer Donna McCullough, this time in an Allowance Optional Claimer for a $17,000 purse on February9.
Trainer Mark Fournier added three more winners to his record at Sam Houston for owner Bruno Schickedanz. Wolvspa won for $8000 on January 26; The Great North won for $5500 on February 10 and Chicago Breeze won for $6000 on February 18.
Santa Anita Park -
Arcadia, California:
Jockey Gerry Olguin has been doing
quite well, recording three more wins this
month for purses totalling $64,400. Owner K.K. Sangara and conditioner Rafael Becerra had a couple of nice wins, the first with Trick A Cat for a claiming purse of $43,800 on February 22. The 4-year-old filly was also claimed for $40,000. The other win was on February
24 for Allowance $60,200 with Fete.
Sunland Park -
Sunland Park, New Mexico:
Jockey Jake Barton marked down a
hockey stick on his score card for the month, after winning 7 races with purses totalling $163,100 which included a stakes win aboard Artesian in the $50,000 Budweiser Handicap on February 10.
Tampa Bay Downs -
Oldsmar, Florida:
Trainer John Simms had three wins
this past few weeks; 2 of which were for his wife Sharon with New Kid in Town on January 26 for $7200 and Majestic Delight on February 10 also for $7200. Thomas Grimes was the owner of Classy Flower, winner for $19,400 on Feb. 15.
Trainer Layne Giliforte had a couple of wins with 4-year-old gelding Six Cross Roads for owner Melnyk Racing Stables. He won on January 28 for $9100 claiming and again on February 16 for $8300 claiming.
Other winners at Tampa include: Belle Gully ($16,700 claiming) for trainer Deborah Simpson and Owner Carlo D’Amato on February 6; Medicine Dance ($6700 claiming) for trainer Myra Mora and owner Blue Star Stable on Feb. 23.
Jockey Martin Ramirez had his first win on January 26 aboard Waving Monarch for owner/trainer Javier Contreras. Jockey Chantal Sutherland had a win aboard With Affirmation for trainer John Kimmel and owners Adam Klein, Allen Briggs ad Robert Cromartie on February 2 for $15,000.
Jockey Richard Dos Ramos had a win for $12,300 for trainer and owner Kirk James on February 11.
Turf Paradise - Phoenix, Arizona:
Jockey Leanne Painter has recorded another six wins since our last report with purses totalling $41,200.
Will Rogers Downs -
Claremore, Oklahoma:
Jockey Helen Vanek has shown up in
the winners circle in Oklahoma for a win aboard Garbu’s Tab for $9500 on February 24.
