Horse Racing plans to Celebrate 250 Years in Canada
While the nation of Canada will be celebrating 150 years of confederation in 2017, Canada’s horse racing industry is planning a celebration of its own.
2017 represents the 250th Anniversary of horse racing in Canada and the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, the National Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, and Standardbred Canada are planning to help the industry celebrate across the country. The main concept of the celebrations will be “250 miles celebrating 250 years of horse racing in Canada” engaging locations across Canada
to hold commemorative miles in honour of the anniversary which will be launched and concluded with major fanfare.
In 1665, Louis XIV directed the shipment of 21 mares and 2 stallions from the royal stable for the use of settlers beside the St. Lawrence. Records of a race meet on what is today, Canadian soil, was held July 1, 1767, exactly 100 years before Confederation.

Vancouver is not in Canada
Vancouver, a city in British Columbia, Canada has not moved however the Australian Stallion by the same name is now standing at Coolmore America for 2017.
Both Vancouver the city and Vancouver the Horse are pretty impressive.
The City of Vancouver is described as a bustling west coast seaport in British Columbia. It’s surrounded by mountains, and has a thriving art, theatre and music scene.
The Horse Vancouver (AUS) (by Medaglia d’Oro
- Skates (AUS) by Danehill) is the winner of four consecutive Stakes including the G1 Tooheys New Golden Slipper and the G3 Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill Gardens and the G2 Todman Stakes at Royal Randwick in Sydney, Australia and is described as an exceptionally good-looking individual.
However don’t confuse the Coolmore stallion Vancouver(AUS) with Vancouver, a 2012 Kentucky- bred Gelding by Tiznow - Passion Du Coeur or Vancouver, a 2001 Kentucky bred horse by Gone West - My True Lady, by Seattle Slew.
Horses registered outside of North America with the same name as horses registered in North America include a country code designation beside their name when competing or standing in North America.
For those registering horses in North America, names of horses over ten years old may be eligible for use if they are not excluded under Rule 6(F) and have not been used during the preceding ve years either for breeding or racing.
Check out The Jockey Club Rules for Naming Horses
I don’t know if there are any naming restrictions
or rules for naming cities however many Canadian cities share their names with smaller townships and suburban areas around the world such as Vancouver, Washington in the United States.
