Woodbine Updates:
Saddling and Winners Circle Changes at Woodbine
In an effort to enhance the visual presentation of racing at Woodbine, mandatory saddling in the Walking Ring began on Saturday, May 27 and will con- tinue every Saturday, Sunday and Holiday, weather permitting, until sometime in September.
“Saddling in the walking ring allows a better presenta- tion of the beauty of Woodbine and brings the patrons outdoors for a better view.”, said Tom Cosgrove, Director of Racing at Woodbine.
Three temporary stalls have
been built in the walking ring area and access to the “rubber room” will be granted only after receiving permission from the Paddock Judge.
Plus, in anticipation of the new Polytrack installation work at Woodbine in July, jockeys will return to the paddock for unsaddling following each race. In addition, all Winners Circle presentations, including Stake presentations will take place in the Winners Circle on the front grandstand apron.
Family Area now permanent
After a successful pilot project in 2005, the System Equine Family Area at Woodbine will now be a permanent fixture at Woodbine.
The Family Area which provides family entertainment and a opportunity to get up close to the horses will be opening for the summer on July 1 and will be open to the public Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays from 11am
to 5pm through to Monday, September 4, 2006.
The System Equine Family Area offers exciting demonstrations, educational displays, backstretch tours & more!
Due to the anticipated racetrack renovations, there will be a change of location for the family area which will be located on the frost side of the grandstand next to the walking ring.
ORC New requirement for blood sample
The Ontario Racing Commission released a Directive in May that requires all owners or trainers to make their horse available to have a blood test taken at any time without prior notice.
The medication control program focuses on significant change of performance of all horses racing in the Province of Ontario and the ORC is committed to expanding the medication control program beyond existing pre-race, post-race testing and retention requirements.
This new blood sample requirement comes on the heels of a news release sent to the press regarding a discussion that resulted in the agreement that John Blakney, Executive Director of the ORC would launch a task force to take immediate and long-term action to deal with the medication control issue.
The group, which consisted of: Conrad Cohen, President HBPA of Ontario; Hugh Mitchell, COO Western Fair Association; James Whelan, President OHHA; David Willmot, Chairman and CEO of WEG; David Liston, Associate Executive Director CPMA; Terry Stone, Director of Racing ORC; and Rob McKinney, Director of Investigations, ORC., recog- nized that the health and well being of the horse is of paramount concern to the racing industry, and that the majority of those licensed in the industry conduct their business with professionalism and abide by the rules.
However, with the recent search and seizure of, as well as rulings on, the acquisition and possession of illegal and non-therapeutic drugs is of concern to horse people, owners, trainers, bettors and the general public.
