Remarkable News (VEN) was the winner of this four horse win photo in the $150,000 Gr.3 Connaught Cup at Woodbine on May 28. Remarkable News(VEN) had appeared to put his rivals away when the field straightened for home, however in an all-out battle for the wire, seven-year-old Le Cinquieme Essai, whose last start was a third place finish in the Gr. 1 Atto Mile last September, showed resiliency
along the rail.
(photo from left to right) Fourth place finisher, Jambalaya, trained by Catherine Day Phillips for her Kingfield Farms and ridden by Jono Jones; Third place finisher, Sky Conqueror, trained by Darwin Banach for owner William Sorokolit Sr. and ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson; Winner, Remarkable News(VEN), trained by Angel Penna for owner Holly Rincon and ridden by Javier Castellano; and second place finisher, Le Cinquieme Essai, trained by Paul Nielsen for owner William Scott and ridden by Steven Bahen.
Sticking to tradition
Jockeys Jack Lauzon (with bucket) and Robbie King Jr. (with hose) sprang from hiding to “wet down” apprentice jockey Dean Deverell after winning his first career race on May 7 at Fort Erie. Dean was aboard the winner Judith’s Lake in the sixth race and dried off enough to win the next race (7th) aboard Mimi’s Pride.
Dean had his first win at Woodbine in a lucra-
tive $70,300 Allowance race on May 14 for trainer Dave Cotey which was the first of two wins that day. He achieved his fifth win on May 18 which officially started his one year apprenticeship and dropped his weight allowance to 5lbs.
The 35-year-old bug is the oldest apprentice to ride in Canada and he currently has 9 wins to his credit. Patricia Burns Photos
