Breeder Lois Keays poses with Metonella who was Hip No 132 in this year’s Select Sale
It was an emotional time for Lois who was not only selling her first ever yearling, but there were also sentiments attached to the filly.
Lois is sixth genera- tion Canadian and a small Ontario breeder who currently owns and breeds four mares. Before getting into breeding thoroughbreds, Lois and her “horse crazy” friend of seventeen years, Jane Campbell, would come to the sales and take in the sight of the beautifully turned out horses as they went through the auction.
One year the friends decided to purchase a mare which they could breed to the stallion Perigee Moon. With the help of bloodstock agent Warren Byrne they purchased Mosella, who had an Argentinian sire (Lord at War) and a French dam (Maxencia). Mosella is the dam of Woodbine winners Judith’s Deed (Alydeed) and Bella Mosella (by Bold N Flashy).
Shortly after Mosella was bred to Perigee Moon,
Jane was diagnosed with cancer and just over a year after Metonella was foaled, Jane passed away on February 27, 2005.
“This was our first thoroughbred yearling and Jane would have been so proud that we made the Select.” said an emotional Lois before the filly went through the sale, “I am having mixed feelings about selling her.”
Metonella, who is named after the fellow who studied the path of the lunar orbit, was purchased for $15,000 by Roger Tanel.
Lois said in an email after the sale, that she will always be Metonella’s biggest fan and she hopes that she is a successful racehorse for her new team.

This Tale of the Cat filly (Hip No. 60) sold to Winsong Farms for $95,000. She is the fourth foal out of a Cozzene mare, Cozzall who was consigned by agent Richard Hogan.
Dan Mooney’s Huntington Stud Farm was busy showing one of the two yearlings they were offering in the Select Sale. He also had another pair to sell in the Preferred sessions.
Auctioneer Ryan Mahan (left on podium) had a little bit of fun with the bidders throughout the evening. In the ring is Hip No 200, a daughter of Alphabet Soup - So Who Cares which sold to Winsong Farms for $62,000 off of Woodlands (Gail Wood), agent.
Photo far left- Hip No 154, a colt by Matty G out of the mare Patience Please, was becoming impatient waiting for his turn in the ring. The feisty colt fetched $160,000 from buyer Tony Mattine for agent, Shannondoe Farm.
