CTHS (British Columbia) September Sale: Sept. 12 & 13
British Columbia Breeders were justly rewarded for their efforts who consignors offered an extensive catalogue of 255 lots in the CTHS September sale, held September 12 and 13 at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley. The 157 horses sold produced a gross of $1,869,500, up from the $1,538,500 attained a year earlier when 123 were sold. Despite a slight reduction in the over-all average as antic- ipated ($11,908 from $12,508) due to the increase in broodmares con- signed, most sellers were more than satisfied and the positive attitude in the industry continues.
For the fourth year in a row the yearling sales average climbed upward. This year’s 129 yearlings sold for a total of $1,784,500, an increase over last year’s $1,485,700 gross for 110 yearlings. The aver- age made a moderate gain from $13,506 in 2004 to $13,833 in 2005, almost double the $7,039 average brought as recently as 2001 when only 88 yearlings achieved winning bids.
With many new players on the local racing scene and hopes of increased revenue for the British Columbia horse racing industry in the near future, sales nominations increased significantly and this year’s sale was carried out in two sessions. 23 broodmares and one weanling made their way through the ring on Monday, September 12, after the traditional yearling parade and barbeque. The yearlings were sold on Tuesday and the large second session started at noon and con- tinued well into the evening.
