Friday Night Racing Returns to Hastings
More Changes at Woodbine in 2005
The Woodbine Race Office has announced that there will be a number of changes for the 2005 thoroughbred live racing season stating that they are in sticking to their commitment to improve racing and the facilities at Woodbine.
The following changes have already been implemented for 2005:
• In an effort to increase field size, Woodbine will pay a starter subsidy of $400 per starter to cover the associated costs of running a racehorse. The subsidy will be deposited into the account of each owner starting a horse who finished out of the top five at Woodbine. The division of the purse money for the top five finishers will remain unchanged.
• Scratch time before race day has been discontinued and veterinary scratches and scratches for exceptional circumstances will be at the discretion of the racing stewards.
• A new deposit limit has been implemented on Horsemen’s Accounts.
Contact the race office for details.
• Complimentary champagne after each stakes event has been discontinued and the refurbished Winner’s Circle on the apron of the grandstand will be used for every race (weather permitting). The infield winners circle will only be used for those Stakes events with
purses of $500,000 or more.
• Due to the anticipated increase in
field sizes and horses in training during the morning, there will now be three outriders on the main track at Woodbine.
• The construction for the new stairway/elevator tower is expected to be complete by the end of June and paddock schooling will be limited during the construction.
• A new rail is being installed around the outside of the E.P. Taylor Turf Course.
For additional information contact the Woodbine Race Office.
With the 2005 live thoroughbred racing season well underway at Hastings, there are a number of changes that have been announced, one of which is the return of Friday night racing. During a press conference held March 24 in Vancouver the announcement was made that there will be an additional 12 race dates added to this years schedule including Friday night racing which returns on June 3 and will run through to the end of September with an additional $200,000 in purses allocated for the added dates. WOODBINE OPENING DAY - CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE
Corey continued his winning ways the following day with a win aboard the Mike Doyle trained, It’s Outta Here for owners S. & H. Lowenstein and J. Storer. Corey emerged from opening weekend as the season’s leading rider.
Last year’s Sovereign Award winner and leading rider at Woodbine, Todd Kabel, didn’t waste any time ‘getting the monkey off his back’ in 2005. Todd was aboard the winner, Ministers Wild Cat, who emerged the winner of a photo finish after an exciting stretch duel with the Reade Baker trained Judiths Wild Rush, ridden by jockey Slade Callaghan, in the first stakes race of 2005, the Jacque Cartier Stakes. Ministers Wild Cat is owned by Marjorie & Irving Cowen and Hal Snowden Jr. and is trained by Scott Fairlie, who also had two additional wins on the weekend with Singing Devil on the Saturday and Truely Unreal on Sunday.
Returning Jockey Robert King Jr. recorded his first win in only his second start back aboard the Darren Glennon trained, Gladiator’s Consort, for owners Ronald House & Rainbow End Racing Stable, on Sunday, April 17.
Macdonald Benson was the winning trainer of the second stakes event of 2005, the Whimsical Stakes. The Augustin Stable owned, Nashinda, was guided to victory by veteran jockey David Clark in the Whimsical Stakes on April 17
Live thoroughbred action continues at Woodbine with racing Wednesday to Sunday beginning May 4. First race post times are 12:55pm Thursday to Sunday and 6:45pm every Wednesday.
