Great Opening Weekend at Woodbine
Successful Start to 2005 Season
Track announcer Dan Loiselle roused the eager crowd of race fans by giving them the job of shouting “They’re off at Woodbine” in response to his signature, “they’re at the post” to start the first race of the 2005 thoroughbred season at Woodbine.
A large crowd packed the grandstand
and they were treated to a great day of racing while soaking in the warm sunshine on April 16.
Four year-old filly, Maryfield, with Champion jockey Patrick Husbands in the irons, was the winner of the first race of 2005 for trainer Josie Carroll and owners Jim and Alice Sapara. Josie had another winner for the Saparas the following day with Dundurn.
Patrick was also a winner the following day aboard Questing Knight for trainer
Mike DePaulo and owner Overheath Stable.
Last year’s Sovereign Award winning apprentice jockey, Corey Fraser, crossed the wire first in two of his six mounts for the day. His first win was in the third race aboard Bandura for trainer John Ross and owner Coman Racing Stable followed by a win in the seventh race aboard the Knob Hill owned Arezzo for trainer Alec Fehr.
