The Canadian Graded Stakes Committee has assigned grades to 35 races to be run in Canada in 2009.
Assiniboia Downs has announced a major shake-up
in its traditional days of live racing in 2009 to build up its’ betting pools by attracting more wagering from other racetracks. The typical live racing week will now be Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings. The only Sunday racing will occur on Mother’s Day, May 10 – opening day for the 65-day meet which ends Sat, Sept. 12.

Two races that were classi ed as Grade 3 in 2008—the Marine Stakes and the British Columbia Oaks—were downgraded to listed stakes.

To qualify for graded stakes status in Canada, Grade 1 races must have a minimum purse of $250,000; Grade 2 races must have a minimum purse of $150,000; and Grade 3 races must have a minimum purse of $100,000.
“Our Sunday race cards last year were our weakest from a wagering standpoint while Tuesday nights saw a dramatic increase in action, largely due to wagering dollars coming from other tracks,” said MJC President Harvey Warner. “Racetracks need more thoroughbred racing on weeknights so we are positioning ourselves to capitalize on that demand.”

Two months into the 2009 season and new Ontario sire, Aljabr is the leading sire in the province.
Sunday racing at Assiniboia Downs saw steep competition for the simulcast dollar from such giants of the industry as Saratoga, Del Mar, and Churchill Downs which all present attractive world class race cards.
A G1 winning son of Storm Cat, Aljabr is already represented by 6 winners in 2009 on Poly and Turf with more than $135,000 in earnings. His winners include Munaddam, winner of the $120,000 Land Rover Trophy, and was second by 1/2 a length in the $120,000 Etisalat Weyak at high weight on Feb 20; Al Kadir, third in a G1 in Argentina; as well as MSW winners at Turfway Park and Tampa Bay Downs.
Post times will be 7 p.m. The only afternoon cards, with a post time of 1 p.m., will be those offered on Mother’s Day Sunday and on holidays:

The Eastern Canadian Thoroughbred Association Annual Banquet and Awards Night is scheduled for April 4 at the Irish Hills Golf and Country Club in Carp, Ontario.

The sandring opened on February 11 and will remain open from 6am to 12 noon through-out March. Training began on the training track the following day and is open from 7 to 11 am without a break for harrowing.

The Polytrack is scheduled to be open middle of March (around the 13th) weather permitting.
The Ontario Racing Commission track of ce opened for licensing on February 25 and will remain open for licensing Wednesday thru Sunday from 8:45 am to 2 pm. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
