As he has been doing since the year 2000 when he was calling races at Emerald Downs, Woodbine’s race caller Robert Geller will be returning to Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino as the race caller for their 2016 - 2017 meet. The Sunland meet begins December 16, 2016 and runs through to April 18, 2017 (but Robert will be back for Woodbine’s opening day on April 15, 2017).
Sunland Park, located in New Mexico, is home to the prestigious Sunland Derby, a Kentucky Derby prep which will be contested on March 26, 2017. Inaugurated in 2003, the $800,000 Grade 3 Sunland Derby was won in 2009 by eventual KY Derby winner, Mine That Bird.
