acclaimed four-part BBC series Black is the New Black,
drawing figures from the worlds of politics, business,
culture, religion and science to share their experiences of
being black and British. It was the first time such a series of
programmes, showcasing black Britons in a positive light,
had been shown on mainstream TV.
The films were conceptually unique, relying solely on
the words spoken by the line-up of people with no archive
or voiceover. They included Naomi Campbell, Sir Trevor
McDonald, Thandie Newton, musicians Jazzie B of Soul II
Soul and Dizzee Rascal and footballer Les Ferdinand. The
portfolio of portraits that Simon shot of his subjects during
the filming of the show were acquired by the National
Portrait Gallery.
Simon began as a commercial photographer,
predominantly in the world of music, working alongside
the likes of MTV, the BBC and record labels to capture stars
including Rihanna, Amy Winehouse, Jay-Z and Kanye West.
He also has a background in advertising but in recent
years has moved into fine art photography, with exhibitions
of his portraiture including the 2013 West End show My
Mates at Work, which featured friends including Sadie Frost,

heavyweight responsible for more than 30 No1 hits and
millions of record sales across the world. When singers and
band want guaranteed hits, Wayne is one of an elite group of
songwriters who gets a call.
As well as those cited above he has written smashes for
the likes of Jess Glynne, Def Leppard, Olly Murs, Westlife
and The Wanted.
One of his biggest recent hits, Starships, written for
American rapper Minaj, was No 1 across the world.
In 2016 Wayne received the prestigious international
achievement award at the Ivor Novello Awards. This prize
has been won in the past by artists including Radiohead and
Sting.
His songwriting career began at the age of nine, when
he wrote a song for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady
Diana. He studied piano and was into poetry at school.
He went on to form R&B group Rhythm and Bass and was
signed to record label Sony in the 1990s. When they split up,
he concentrated on songwriting.
His awards include BMI Country Award and BMI London
Award for his work on Trace Adkins’ Help Me Understand,
ASCAP award in 2005 for his work on Rascal Flatts’ Feels
Like Today and The Pussycat Dolls’ I Hate This Part. He also
won at the 2010 Brit Awards for his work on JLS’s Beat Again.
