IKENNA ONYEMA
Following graduation, I started at HSBC
via the Prince’s Trust. Within a few
weeks I successfully applied for a full
time position. Whilst in this role, I took
the opportunity to complete an appren-
ticeship. This provided me with a solid
understanding of bank processes and
left me with some helpful, practical the-
ory to put to use. After two-and-a-half
years in the branch and a promotion, I
successfully gained a place on the grad-
uate scheme.
I’m about to start my third and fi nal
placement. Each placement has pre-
sented opportunities to learn and devel-
op myself further. I’ve learnt more about
the wider business and I have built valu-
able connections with di erent teams.
While on the scheme I’ve improved my
writing and communication style and
discovered a creative side that I didn’t
know I had. I’ve also been fortunate to
lead on projects and now have a greater
appreciation for technology and how
we can apply it. Outside of work, I’ve
had the opportunity to help promote di-
versity within the bank and attract new
graduates to the scheme.
I’ve identifi ed where I have knowledge
gaps and taken action to develop these
